Goodie Maier celebrates a century of life

Posted

Friends, VFW brothers and sister, and family gathered to celebrate a momentous occasion as Gladys “Goodie” Maier celebrated her 100th birthday this past Sunday.

Maier is a Monticello graduate and the wife of a familiar and beloved face in Wurtsboro, Edward M. Maier who is still referred to as “Uncle Ed” seven years after his passing.

A beloved figure in her own right, Maier stood right beside her husband when VFW Post 4947 first had its beginnings in Bloomingburg, in January of 1946 as Edward had just returned home from his service in World War II.

The couple worked together to create a space for veterans to come together, support each other, and preserve the memories of their brave  sacrifice.

However, Goody’s commitment didn’t end there. She has dedicated more than 80 years of her life to volunteering, advocating for, and uplifting her community as a founding member of the VFW auxiliary. Goody’s contributions, whether through the VFW or other neighborhood projects, have influenced Wurtsboro and beyond.

“Goodie has been a pillar of our community for 100 years,” stated Kathy LaBuda, the local American Legion Ladies at Sullivan President.

Numerous lives have been impacted by her generosity, kindness, and unyielding spirit, and the organizations she helped create are deeply rooted in her legacy.

“Goodie, your impact is a measurable, and your example is one that will continue to inspire generations to come,” said Hugo Ramirez, Commander of VFW Post 4947. “Thank you for everything you have done for us all. Here to you, Goodie Maier, on this special day, and to the many more years of love, laughter and joy that lie ahead.”

“God wants me to stay,” attributed Goodie on her many years with us. “This was wonderful. It’s nice to know that so many people remember.”
