ROSCOE — The JAKES were back in Roscoe on Saturday morning to celebrate young sportsmen with a day full of fun. Educational demonstrations, hands-on learning opportunities and tons of raffle prizes gave attendees plenty to do.

The homemade birdhouses, which have been a huge draw at the event, were back this year. With this year’s allotment of birdhouse parts, there have now been over 3500 kits crafted since the event’s inception.

The event is fueled by donations and volunteer efforts, and seeks to introduce the next generation to the world of sportsmen, which includes environmental conservation and preservation. 

The JAKES’ journey began back in 2005 as part of the Youth Expo in Grahamsville, but has since expanded and moved to their new home at the Roscoe Fireman’s Field.

“We have a wonderful relationship with the Roscoe-Rockland Fire Department and we appreciate them hosting us year after year,” Organizer Butch Kortright said. “There are a lot of people that put a lot of effort into making this event happen.”

Kortright also expressed his gratitude for the continued community support. “We have kids that come here for years and enjoy it so much that they come back and teach the next generation. It’s all about people working together and making it a great day.”
