FALLSBURG – In an exciting matchup between the Liberty Redhawks and the Fallsburg Comets on Friday night, the Redhawks came out on top. Early on during the matchup, the teams were evenly matched, but the Comets’ Paola Melendez Deras scored two back-to-back goals in less than 5 minutes, giving the Comets a 2-0 lead over Liberty. As the quarter neared the 20-minute mark, Liberty battled back from behind, scoring two goals of their own from junior Angie Wheeler, tying the game at 2-2 and setting the tone for a fired-up Redhawks squad leading into the second half.

Both teams came out vying to break the tie. The Redhawks had several close goal attempts by a tenacious Sydania Foster at the beginning of the second half, but it was Wheeler who powered through to score Liberty’s third point and the final goal of the game. Goalies for the Redhawks and Comets were kept busy on both ends of the field, racking up over 30 saves combined.

Junior Marilyn Santos was a tough opponent on defense for Fallsburg, while sophomore Brooke Bull put down some amazing efforts on defense as well.

Coach Medina of the Redhawks said of Wheeler, “She really turned it up in the last 10 minutes of the first half, and that energy flowed through the team. They were ready to back her up and stayed organized to seal the victory.”
