SULLIVAN COUNTY — The first weekend of 8-Man football did not disappoint, featuring a few lopsided scores and an overtime win in the same weekend. Sullivan West and Eldred both clocked in wins of more than 40 points against their opponents, while Tri-Valley battled with Ellenville, defeating the Blue Devils 22-16 in overtime. Livingston Manor, Fallsburg, Liberty and Monticello were all on the losing end of the scoreboard this week.

Across Sullivan County this weekend there are multiple teams with a weekend off, but there are two key matchups to look forward to featuring four local teams.

Livingston Manor, Eldred and Fallsburg are all off this weekend, while Tri-Valley and Sullivan West face off in Lake Huntington and the Redhawks and Panthers play in Monticello.

Tri-Valley at Sullivan West, 1 p.m.

Both the Bears and Bulldogs are headed into Week 2 with a 1-0 record, but only one team will stand atop the division by Saturday night. The defending champs put together an impressive season opener with a 44-0 win over Onteora. They handled business on all three phases, showing that they have not lost a step since their dramatic championship victory over Pawling last season. They have home field advantage and the Dawg Pound will surely be out in full force tomorrow afternoon when the two teams collide on the gridiron.

Tri-Valley, on the other hand, got off to a great start with a gritty win over Ellenville. They held the Blue Devils to just 16 points as they ended regulation in a tie. In overtime, the Bears were able to seal the win in front of the home crowd, showing their resilience against a team that had their number last year. In recent years, Sullivan West has gotten the better of Tri-Valley in head-to-head matchups, and the Bulldogs will look to keep that momentum going as they work towards another championship appearance.

Liberty at Monticello, 1 p.m.

Both the Redhawks and the Panthers had some tough matchups in Week 2, facing off against Port Jervis and Wallkill respectively. The two combined to be outscored 89-2 last weekend. After Liberty’s big season-opening win over Fallsburg, the Redhawks will look to get back in the win column on Saturday. Monticello is still looking for their first win of the season, but defeated Liberty 21-0 in the head-to-head last year. It’ll be a good opportunity for Monticello to figure out their offensive identity against a tough Liberty defense that is sure to throw some new looks their way.
