MONTICELLO – The Monticello Panthers fell to 0-2 on the season as they lost, 35-2, to the Wallkill Panthers in their home opener last Saturday. Wallkill scored on the second play from scrimmage as senior Devin Strother took a reverse 81 yards to the house. Wallkill added another score nearly halfway through the first quarter with Kaden Brown coming up with a 56-yard touchdown catch.

After the first quarter, Wallkill was leading 13-0 and they started the second quarter finding the endzone again to increase their lead to 19-0. Monticello fumbled the ensuing kickoff which set Wallkill up at the 22-yard line. The Monticello defense stepped up and forced a turnover on downs, but immediately turned it back over as a pass from quarterback Orrin Hutchinson III was intercepted by Wallkill’s Maxx Vanspanje and returned to the Monticello 21-yard line.

With 7:10 remaining in the half, Ken Glasgow ran it in for a score to make it 26-0. With 3:35 to go, Monticello hit a big play as Javien Williams ran to the Wallkill 31-yard line. Shortly after, however, a sack-fumble on Hutchinson III was recovered by Walkill.

On the very next play, Brown hit a home run for his second touchdown of the day, a catch-and-run for 60 yards. At halftime, it was 33-0 Wallkill.

Not much offensive action occurred in the second half, with Walkill sacking Hutchinson in the end zone for the safety at the 6:41 mark of the third quarter.

Monticello got close to finding pay dirt with a long run to within the five-yard line, but a fumble at the three turned the ball back over to Wallkill. With the clock running, the game ended with Monticello getting to the Wallkill quarterback in the end zone for a safety, the home team’s only score of the day.
