Mentor to many

Most people can think back on their days in school and remember a specific teacher, coach or faculty member who helped make them the person they are today.

For generations of students in Sullivan County, that person has been Ron Bauer.

Mr. Bauer started his career in teaching 56 years ago, working in the Delaware Valley, Jeff-Youngsville and Sullivan West Central School Districts.

During his own school days Bauer was a stand-out athlete on the track and gridiron. He later turned that experience into a legendary coaching career. Bauer guided teams to 11 sectional championships over the course of his career at Delaware Valley, Jeff-Youngsville and Sullivan West, along with 18 division titles.

He was a mentor to countless young people, both as a coach and a teacher, promoting not only excellence on the field but also in the classroom.

As a middle school social studies teacher, he inspired his students with New York State history, including that of the many indigenous tribes who once populated our region. His overhead projector and slides could surely be memorialized in the school’s trophy case.

While his teaching and coaching career have inspired so many in the school district, he was also a mentor to those of the Catholic faith, working as a Sunday school teacher for many years as well as Eucharistic minister.

Mr. Bauer’s dedication to his community and his students, including the extra hours spent on weekends and summers, will not be forgotten.

Mr. Bauer reminds us of the incredibly important role that teachers serve in our communities. We’re lucky to have many talented teachers in Sullivan County who go above and beyond for the benefit of their students. They understand that the job means more than just a paycheck. It means fostering the next generation of young people who will one day become productive and thoughtful members of society.

Although we’re sad to see Mr. Bauer retire, we know he will still be a familiar face in the community to which he has dedicated so much. His lasting impression will surely not be forgotten.
