Monticello earns first win over Ellenville

ROSCOE –– The Blue Devils and Panthers kicked off day two of the Fred Ahart Foundation Games on Saturday morning. Two strong defenses duked it out, but Monticello ultimately came out on top, winning 38-31 and earning their first win of the season.

Monticello took home a wire-to-wire victory, but Ellenville kept it close throughout the contest.

After the first quarter, Monticello held a 12-6 lead, the beginning of a low-scoring, defensive duel. By halftime, Ellenville had cut slightly into the lead, making it 19-14 at the break.

The two teams traded blows in the third quarter, neither being able to cut into, or extend, the lead. At the end of the third quarter, Monticello’s lead remained at five points, leading 28-23.

In the fourth quarter, Ellenville kept it interesting, cutting the lead again with a few minutes remaining. Monticello was able to finish the game on a 3-1 run, however, to hold on for the seven-point victory.

Quenten Liciaga led all scorers with 19 points as the Panthers took down the Blue Devils.

“We made it closer than we needed to down the stretch,” Monticello Coach Chris Russo said after the game. “I’m happy for our guys getting their first win of the season, and it’s always great to participate in the Fred Ahart Foundation Games. I started my coaching career here in Roscoe with Fred and Becky [Ahart], and it has always been a deep and meaningful connection.”

Monticello will host Warwick on Thursday evening, hoping to build momentum early in 2025.
