Monticello salutes their heroes on Veterans Day

Posted

The Sullivan County Government Center in Monticello was bustling with activity Monday morning for the remembrance of Veteran’s Day.

Master of Ceremonies and Commander of Sullivan County’s Jewish War Veterans, William Kapito, presided over the ceremony.

He was joined by the Director of Veteran Services for Sullivan County, Stephen Walsh, who introduced two special guests – Eugene Weinstein and Martin Feldman, both 99 years old, both World War II Veterans.

Feldman was drafted into WWII at 19 years old while studying to be an engineer.

“It would be approximately fifteen years before Marty would speak to anyone about the horrific and gruesome things he had seen and experienced as a P.O.W.,” said Walsh.

Walsh’s son Antonio and Commander Al Russell presented Feldman with a plaque and a World War II Army Veteran baseball cap, rectifying something he had never received until then.

Weinstein, a  WW II Veteran,  enlisted at the age of 17 serving for 5 years. Afterwards, he re-enlisted to serve during the Korean War. He was also Kapito’s teacher at Monticello High School.

“Today is Veteran’s Day, but we will not only recognize the veterans of the military,” stated Kapito. “We will also recognize the fireman, police officers, those that still serve, continue to serve and those who have died in serving their country.”
