Norman Samuel Kaufman passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born April 5, 1929, to Abraham and Minnie Kaufman, he was 94 years old. Norman grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Monticello, attending the local two-room schoolhouse. He married the love of his life, Phyllis, in 1949, and was a devoted husband of 74 years. Early parenthood brought the couple to Brooklyn, where Norman built a business as a kosher butcher. He and his family returned to the Catskills in 1965, where he ran Kaufman’s Bungalow Colony with his twin brother David. Norman was active in the Sullivan County community, volunteering for the local Boy Scouts, the Village Board of Monticello, the Civil Defense Patrol, and at Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center. Phyllis and Norman built a successful alarm company, PN Alarm, which is run by his eldest son Steven and grandson Jared. Norman was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting excursions all over the world. He was a master carpenter, building many of his family’s most precious heirlooms. Upon retirement, Norman and Phyllis wintered in Delray Beach, Florida, where he played golf and volunteered at the Palm Beach Zoo.
Norman will be missed by his many friends, his community, and most importantly, his loving family. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Kaufman; children: Steven Kaufman and wife Lois, Robin Epstein and husband Martin, Neil Kaufman, Rhonda Golub and husband Jonathan; grandchildren: Mandi Dickman and husband Scott, Jared Kaufman and wife Julie, Alyssa Roney and husband Brian, Michael Epstein, Harrison Kaufman, Hunter Kaufman, Heven Kaufman, Mikayla Golub, Aidan Golub, Daryn Golub; great-grandchildren: Jordan Dickman, Max Dickman, Sammy Dickman, Nolan Kaufman, Ari Kaufman; many nieces, nephews and cousins. His siblings, David Kaufman, Irving Kaufman, and Esther Bohrer, predeceased him.
A funeral service was held on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue, Monticello, and he was buried at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery.
