MONTICELLO- With winter in full swing and the holidays officially out of the way the Panthers were able to host their 12th Anuual Jingle Ball Classic.
The tournament is held every year during Christmas break with The host Monticello inviting Chester Valley Central and Wallkill to Sullivan County to honor Coach Dick O’Neill.
The weather put a slight damper on the tournament back in December which pushed the games into the new year.
The opening game was between Monticello and Valley Central with Valley Central grabbing a dominating 64-37 win over the Panthers. Walkill defeated Chester 54-46. The Monti Panthers played a competitive game against Chester but ultimately fell short again to Chester with a loss of 48-46. Valley Central would get the best of Walkill and defeat them 51-48 in another close call matchup.
After the tournament, Coach Russo from the host Monticello Panthers stated:
“I am so grateful that we have the opportunity to honor Coach O’Neill each year with this tournament. The impact he's had on this community is immeasurable and this is a simple gesture of thanks to him for all that he as done for me personally and professionally. He poured his heart and soul into this program and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to have coached with him. Seeing our kids, staff, and former player spend a few moments with him is simply amazing.”
Coach Russo also had great things to say about the other teams and coaches in the tournament.
“It was great to have competitive games among evenly matched teams. I would like to thank Hunter Andrews, Jon Marsilio, and Frank Nutt for their willingness to be a part of the tournament each year; as well as Ryan Jasper, our table people, and security staff for helping us put on a great event. Special shout out to Coach Larkin and our JV guys who won both games in the tournament. Harrison continues to do a great job with our younger guys and I am very fortunate to have him with me.”
