MONTICELLO — The Black Library in Monticello hosted a candidate forum for local State Assembly and Senate races, organized by the Sullivan County NAACP Branch. “Meet Your Sullivan County Candidates,” provided voters an opportunity on October 16 to engage directly with the candidates, learn about their platforms, and ask questions on issues affecting the community.

Participants included 100th Assembly District candidates Paula Kay (D) and Lou Ingrassia (R), as well as 51st State Senate District candidates Michele Frazier (D) and incumbent Peter Oberacker (R). The forum was moderated by Dr. Sean Wall-Carty from the Sullivan County Chapter of the NAACP.

The candidates spoke about housing affordability, managing inflation, and the balance between economic growth and environmental preservation. Each candidate had the opportunity to present their views and respond to both pre-prepared and live audience questions.

Among the key issues debated were strategies to address the housing crisis, support for local businesses amid rising costs, and the candidates’ plans for maintaining the region’s natural beauty while encouraging sustainable development.

Additionally, discussions focused on how the candidates intend to advocate for the interests of the 51st Senate District and the 100th Assembly District, ensuring that the region’s unique needs are represented in Albany.

With early voting starting on October 26 and Election Day set for November 5, the event’s goal was to inform voters and help them make educated decisions at the polls.

The forum was broadcasted live on Zoom, and will be rebroadcast on Radio Catskill in the coming days
