Chipping made simple

Hope all you golfers out there enjoyed watching the US Open this past week. It came down to the last hole between two icons of the game, Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy.

To be honest, they both were feeling the pressure on the last few holes. Rory couldn’t make short putts and Bryson couldn’t find the fairways. The great bunker shot Bryson hit with his 55-degree Ping sand wedge will go down as one of the greatest shots in US Open history.

That shot could’ve gone anywhere under the pressure he was feeling. Very exciting. Rory, on the other hand, flat out choked. I actually can understand missing the last putt with a lot of break for a 3-foot putt.

Before that, though, he missed a short putt with very little break and his caddy, in my opinion, wasn’t forceful enough to hand him a club that would never go over the par 3. They both messed up. Rory should have won.

I’m not upset at all that he didn’t talk to the media but at least stay in the scoring tent and shake Bryson’s hand. We all know how the media questions would’ve gone.

The tip of the week is on Chipping. If your ball was on the edge of the green 40 feet from the hole you would putt.

The putting stroke motion should be done with no wrist movement. Just a rocking motion of your arms and shoulders try to keep the putter face straight.

If you move the ball off the green 3 feet into the rough and have a 43-foot chip, you don’t need to change the motion.

Switch to the club that gets the ball onto the green then rolls the rest of the way to the hole. Don’t make it complicated. You don’t need a sand wedge or lob wedge. A 9 iron has enough loft on it to carry 5 feet on to the green and then roll to the hole. Keep it simple.
