Monticello and Sullivan West earn big wins

Posted

SULLIVAN COUNTY - Week three was light on games with just four teams in action in crosstown rivalry games. Both Monticello and Sullivan West displayed strong offensive performances on their way to big wins over Liberty and Tri-Valley respectively.

This week, five of the seven county schools will be in action with home and road games tonight and tomorrow.

Livingston Manor and Fallsburg both have the weekend off with the contests being canceled according to the Section 9 website.

 Friday Night Lights

Monticello at O’Neill, 7 p.m.

The Panthers earned a big win over Liberty in Week 3, taking down the Redhawks 54-16 in front of the home crowd on Saturday afternoon. After a slow offensive start to the season, Monticello was able to figure it out on both sides of the ball against Liberty, and will look to keep the momentum going as they take on an 0-2 O’Neill team on the road tonight.

O’Neill started their season with a 26-0 loss to Burke Catholic and followed that up with a 20-13 loss against Spackenkill. The Raiders are still looking for their first win, but they’ll have to get through Monticello to earn it.

 Eldred at Ellenville, 7 p.m.

The hive was on a bye week last week, and will look to keep their road win streak going as they take on the Ellenville Blue Dvils tonight. In their first game of the season, Eldred defeated Livingston Manor/Roscoe and will look to keep that momentum up.

While Eldred had the week off, Ellenville was hard at work in their home opener, taking down Pine Plains 34-20 for their first win. After a crushing overtime loss to Tri-Valley in their season opener, the Blue Devils were able to get in the win column, and both teams will be looking for their second win tonight.

Sullivan West at Pine Plains, 7 p.m.

The defending champs have been nothing short of spectacular to start the season. Through two games, the Sullivan West Bulldogs have outscored opponents 96-8 as they’ve cruised to an easy 2-0 start after their 52-8 win over Tri-Valley last week. The Bulldogs will be headed on the road for the first time this season as they visit the Bombers, who are off to an 0-2 start.

Pine Plains has been outscored 54-20 to start the year, losing 20-0 to Pawling and 34-20 to Ellenville. The Bombers are back at home tonight and will look to slow down the daunting Sullivan West offense.

 Saturday Showcase

Cairo-Durham at Tri-Valley, Noon

The Bears are looking to get back in the win column this week as they take on a non-league, non-section opponent in Cairo-Durham. Originally supposed to face the Livingston Manor/Roscoe Wildcats, the Bears announced their new opponent on Tuesday afternoon after Livingston Manor’s continued struggle with low numbers.

Caro-Durham is off to a slow start to the season, being outscored 94-6 through their first two games in Section IV. Tri-Valley will likely look to capitalize on Saturday afternoon and earn the win in front of the home crowd.

 Saugerties at Liberty, 1 p.m.

After their big win over Fallsburg in Week 1, Liberty has struggled to find their offense in back-to-back weeks. With big losses to Port Jervis and Monticello, the Redhawks need to take advantage of their home opener tomorrow.

Saugerties started the season 2-1, with wins over Monticello and Roosevelt to begin the year. Last week, they dropped a home game to Marlboro, losing 23-6.

The Sawyers will not be an easy team to beat, and Liberty will need to get back to how they played in Week 1 as they get out in front of the home crowd.
