Week five presents interesting league matchups

SULLIVAN COUNTY – Week 4 answered some questions, but also raised new ones, as the county teams are still fighting for position in the 8-man standings. The 11-man teams in Liberty and Monticello have continued their campaigns, working hard to stay competitive against their opponents.

With Sullivan West and Tri-Valley earning big wins over Fallsburg and Tri-Valley respectively, each will have tough tests ahead of them this week.

Friday Night Lights

Ellenville at Sullivan West

Sullivan West made a statement in Week 4 after squeaking by Eldred in Week 3. They traveled to Morningside Park to take on the Comets, taking to the skies to win via the pass rather than their typical rush-heavy offense.

Ellenville earned their first win on a last-second come from behind victory over Eldred, who had them on the ropes for the entirety of the second half, but a win nonetheless should give them momentum going into this marquee matchup against the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. tonight.

Monticello at Goshen

Monticello traveled to Middletown last week to take on the winless Middie Bears. Sierra DeGiorgio, a junior for Middletown, became the first female starting QB in a AA game, and it gave Middletown the boost to get their first win, 29-14 over Monticello.

Goshen is 2-3 but had a big division win over Beacon last week, and will look to keep that momentum going as they take on Monticello tonight.

Saturday’s Selections

Fallsburg at Tri-Valley

Tri-Valley is looking to continue their hot streak against division opponents after starting 2-0 with wins over Ellenville and Livingston Manor/Roscoe. This next matchup will be a tough one as Fallsburg will look to rebound after the tough loss to Sullivan West last week.

The Comets scored a few times against Sullivan West early, but struggled in the second half of the game as the Bulldogs began running away with it. The Comets will look to bounce back against the Bears on Saturday afternoon, as they try to knock off the top team in the division.

Marlboro at Liberty

Liberty has had a rough season so far. Winless and outscored 141 to 14 through their first four games, the Indians will look to get something going against Marlboro in a division matchup this weekend. Last week, Liberty lost 54-0 against Port Jervis.

Marlboro is 2-3 so far this season, with a 1-2 record in the division. They beat Saugerties 14-6 last week but have yet to get much offense going themselves.

Eldred at Livingston Manor/Roscoe

Eldred has had a tough start to divisional play after beating Onteora for their first win since 2018. A late rally that fell short against Sullivan West and an improbable 97-yard catch and run for the win against Ellenville puts the Yellowjackets at 0-2 rather than 2-0. They will look to finally get a league win as they take on Livingston Manor/Roscoe under the lights on Saturday.

The Blue Devils have battled in every game, but their low numbers and general inexperience have worked against them in the early half of the season. They lost 20-14 against Fallsburg and then Tri-Valley earned a big win against them last week. Their playoff hopes are beginning to fade after reaching the semi-final game last year, but a win over Eldred could keep them in the conversation.
