TV stars shine as boys and girls win Section Championship

GOSHEN — Seven of our eight Sullivan County schools competed in Friday’s Section 9 Class B and D Championship at Goshen High School. Fallsburg, the lone Class C school, competed on Thursday in Accord, NY. After a long day spent out in the sun, the Tri-Valley boys and girls hoisted their Section 9 Class D Championship plaques after some fierce competition.

“This is the ninth consecutive win for the boys team,” Tri-Valley Coach Skylar Musa said. “The boys team beat the next place team by 19 points, and the girls beat the next team by 40 points.”

This is the second year in a row that both the Tri-Valley boys and girls won their respective Section Championship, but there were impressive performances from throughout the county.

Tri-Valley’s Logan Weyant finished first in the Pole Vault with a jump of 10ft, as well as a third place finish in the 110m High Hurdles.

Nick Bender, also for Tri-Valley, came in second for the Pole Vault with a jump of 9-6.

Van Furman won all four of his individual events, the 3000m Steeplechase, 3200m, 1600m and 800m.

Craig Costa finished second in the 1600m, third in the 3200m, third in the 3000m Steeplechase and fourth in the 800m.

Kane Poje finished second in the Shot Put and third in Discus, re-breaking his Freshman Tri-Valley records in both events.

Kendall McGregor won all four of her individual events, setting a new Tri-Valley school record in the 100m in the process. Her time of 12.79 broke a record that had lasted for more than 30 years. Aside from that, McGregor took first in the 100m High Hurdles, 400m Intermediate Hurdles and the 200m.

Sophia Richardson won the open 400m with a time of 1:01.98 and finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 29-11.

Dakota Evans took first place in Discus with a throw of 93-10.

Molly VanEtten finished second in Triple Jump, third in the 100m High Hurdles, third in the 400 Intermediate Hurdles and third in High Jump.

The Tri-Valley girls also won the 4x800m Relay, with a team consisting of Ally Chevalier, Amelia Mickelson, Em Richardson and Anna Furman. Anna also won the 1,500m and 3,000m as well.

Eldred’s Cooper Stutz finished second in the 100m. Gabriella Wong, a freshman from Eldred took second place in the Discus with a throw of 82-02.

Eldred’s Tahill Brown took third in the High Jump, earning six points for the team with a jump of 5-06.

John Morabito took third in the Long Jump with a jump of 19-03. Morabito also took second in the Triple Jump with a jump of 39-00.50.

Liberty’s Girls 4x100m Relay took sixth place to earn a point in Class B. The Boys’ 4x800m Relay team earned two points with a fifth place finish.

Monticello’s Tyrese Shaw (third) and Raphael Liciaga (sixth) placed in the 100m dash. Shaw also took third in the 200m, running a PR time of 22.60.

Tahir Denton took second in the 100m Hurdles for the Panthers, earning eight points for the team.

Chelsea Reynolds took sixth in the 400m, and Eduardo Salinas finished second in the Boys 800m.

Diya Patel’s third place finish in the 2000m Steeple was good for six points.

Sencere Wall-Thomas earned six points with a third place finish in the Discus with a throw of 127-00.

David Williams took fifth in the High Jump, with a jump of 5-10.00. Quenten Liciaga took sixth with a jump of 5-10.00.

David Williams took fourth in the Long Jump and Liciaga took sixth.

Owen Messenger’s 10-00.00 Pole Vault was good for sixth place.

Monticello’s relay teams had a few top six finishes as well, with the Boys 4x100 taking third, the Girls 4x400 taking fifth and the Girls 4x800 taking fourth.

For Livingston Manor, Elizabeth Hermann took sixth place in the Discus.

Sullivan West also had some standout performers. Peter March won the 100m. He also took second in the 110m Hurdles. March also won the 400m Hurdles, with teammate Calvin Powell finishing fourth.

Katelynn Smith (second) and Brooke Nunnari (fourth) both placed in the 100m Hurdles. The pair finished in the same places for the 400m Hurdles as well.

 Emerson Mall took fifth in the 200m and fourth in the High Jump. Jasmine Green took fourth in the 400m.

Gracyn Halloran took first in the 800m and third in the 1500m.

Landon Volpe took fifth in the 1600m and fourth in the 3000m Steeple.

Layla Wilkin took fifth in the 2000m Steeple.

In the distance races, Paige Sigelakis took sixth in the 3000m and Landen Boyd took sixth in the 3200m.

Hunter Ebeling won the Long Jump (19-08.00) and took fourth in the High Jump, leaping 5-02.00.

Keely Schock won the Pole Vault with a jump of 8-00.00 and took sixth in the High Jump.

Jazarah Ulu-mckune took first in the Shot Put, throwing for 29-11.50, a PR.

On Thursday, Fallsburg had  a few top six finishes in the A and C Section Championships.

Isaiah Young took first in the 100m with a time of 11.18. Young won the 400m with a time of 49.83

Zoey Ketcham took second in the 100m with a time of 12.96. Ketcham won the 200m with a time of 26.96 as well.
