DOWNSVILLE – Roscoe headed to Section IV during the holiday break to participate in Downsville’s holiday tournament.

Roscoe squared off against the hosting Eagles on Tuesday afternoon, losing a heartbreaking game after Downsville nailed 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. Downsville hit some timely shots to hold on for the 51-47 victory.

Throughout the game, Roscoe would cling to a 5-point game, at least until the waning minutes of the 4th quarter.

After the first quarter, the Blue Devils led 10-5, and by halftime it was 18-13. At the end of the third quarter, despite adding 11 points, only led 29-24.

The Eagles started the fourth quarter with back-to-back treys to take a 30-29 lead, and the two traded shots until the final minute.

The Blue Devils held a 38-35 lead with 18 seconds left, but Downsville got the shot they wanted in the final possession of regulation, and a three-pointer sent the teams to overtime.

Downsville stayed hot in overtime, starting the extra quarter with two more threes to give them a six point lead. Try as they might, the Blue Devils were unable to recover and ultimately lost the game, sending them to the consolation match against Deposit/Hancock on Wednesday.

The Eagles moved on to face Margaretville in the championship round.

“Downsville deserves a lot of credit. They hit big shots when they needed to and they played with a lot of toughness,” Coach Mike Hill said after the loss. “When you win the last 5:02 of the game, you have a good chance of winning. And that’s exactly what Downsville did tonight.”

On Wednesday against Deposit/Hancock, another Eagle squad, the Blue Devils played a much better game. Although they were trailing 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Roscoe offense came to life in the second, outscoring D/H 20-2 for a 28-13 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Blue Devils held and extended their lead in the third and fourth quarters respectively. They finished with a big 44-28 bounce back win.

“It was a much better result today. We started slow but our man-to-man defense was a big difference,” Coach Hill explained. “It was a bright spot after a tough loss.”
